UK: Greenest Ever Day on Easter Monday

The UK's electricity grid was the greenest it has ever been on Eater Bank Holiday Monday, with 80% of energy coming from zero-carbon energy sources. National Grid ESO explained that the sunny and windy weather, coupled with the low demand for power on the day led to a surge in renewable sources of energy. On Monday, wind power made up 39% of the electricity mix, solar power 21& and nuclear 16% - meaning zero carbon sources made up 80% of the nation's power.

US: Transforming the power sector – cutting carbon while keeping the lights on

CleanTechnica recently published an article that highlights the decisive transition that the US power sector faces across the coming decade. 2019 capped a decade capitalised by the decline of coal, the rise of natural gas and the growth of renewables - but the coming years will see an acceleration to a carbon-free electric future. The article goes into further detail from the RMI's report, 'Cutting Carbon while keeping the lights on', which explains that 50% of the US coal fleet could be retired by 2025 without a direct capacity replacement - intensifying the requirements in solar and wind energy. You can read the full article here.

UK: The cost of net zero?

Reaching net zero will require major changes in two main areas: transport and buildings. Shifts in these areas will create winners and losers and this will be further reviewed as to where the costs will fall in a report set to publish later this year. Along with a financial barrier there will also be an attitudinal barrier among consumers who will require educating and encouraging to help them understand the benefits of installations such as heat pumps. These changes will be costly for the country but the financial and environmental gain long term will be great.
